Taichung City Municipal Building
Picture
The new Taichung City Municipal Building is the first of three new buildings (Municipal Building, City Council Building and Metropolitan Opera House) comprising the new Municipal Center. Located in central Taiwan, Taichung has experienced a remarkable rate of economic and cultural development in recent years. Completed in October 2010, the new Municipal Building began offering services only two months later.

The initial design competition included 130 entries from 44 countries. It was Taiwan's first large-scale international architectural competition in a public setting. The winning design has set several records in Taiwan. At the time of completion, it was the office building with the largest span (67.2 x 50 meters with a 10 meter height) without supporting columns beneath. It also featured the largest stone curtain ceiling and first auditorium with a suspension structure. The new Municipal Building was awarded the National Construction Excellence Award in the Best Planning category.
