Chinese Culture University Athletic Center
Chinese Culture University Athletic Center
Established more than 50 years ago, Chinese Culture University (CCU) is one of Taiwan's largest institutions of higher learning with over 30,000 students enrolled. Located on northern Taipei's Yangming Mountain, CCU offers spectacular day and nighttime views of Taipei. The new CCU Athletic Center faced two specific challenges: to have a column-free interior necessary for sporting venues, and additionally an unobstructed, column-free frontage to maximize views of Taipei from the spectacular mountaintop location. In addition to these specific design requirements, the Athletic Center sits at the edge of a hill slope in a very seismically active area, necessitating a very clever structural system that is more integrated with the architectural design than that of a typical building.
In addition to numerous academic programs up to the Ph.D. level, athletics have historically been an integral part of student life at CCU. In the 2000 Sydney Summer Olympic Games, CCU sports teams were awarded three gold, one silver and three bronze medals. The strong athletics program and desire to improve the physical health of the general student population resulted in a world-class athletic center. The 8-story CCU Athletic Center features all the facilities that would be expected from an Olympic medal-winning university's exercise and recreation center. Construction was completed in September 2005. |
