Quanta Computer Research & Development Complex
Taiwan's technology industry has been one of the country's key drivers of economic growth. During the 1980s Taiwan transitioned away from labor intensive industries and into technology manufacturing. Taiwan's technology manufacturing industry follows both the OEM model (the manufacturing of parts or subsystems for use in another company's products) and the ODM model (the design and manufacturing of a product as specified for the eventual rebranding by another company for sale). The country's OEM/ODM manufacturers are most well-known for two products: semiconductors and laptop computers.

Over 90 percent of all laptop computers are manufactured in Taiwan, with the industry dominated by five major local ODMs manufacturing for global brands such as Apple, Dell and Lenovo. Quanta Computer is the world's largest ODM manufacturer of laptop computers with 50 million units produced per year. The company's headquarters, Quanta Computer Research & Development Complex (QRDC) houses 5,000 employees. QRDC is located in Taoyuan in northwestern Taiwan. Taoyuan is located about 50 km from Hsinchu, which is home to most of Taiwan's technology companies. In addition to Quanta Computer, several other technology companies have chosen to base their operations in Taoyuan, which offers more convenient access to Taiwan's largest airport and the national capital Taipei.

QRDC features offices, laboratories, a stadium seating performance hall, a library, an art gallery, and a gym and swimming pool. Two 8-story buildings are adjoined by a massive curved roof to form one continuous structure. The steel framed roof is covered with fabric and glass panels and creates an impressive open area between the two buildings. An elevated conference room overlooks the rest of QRDC and has similar aesthetics to the roof. Along with a colorful LED lighting scheme, the conference room and roof allow QRDC to stand out from more traditional office buildings. QRDC was completed in 2005.
