The new Taichung City Council Building is the second of three new buildings (Municipal Building, City Council Building and Metropolitan Opera House) comprising the new Municipal Center. Located in central Taiwan, Taichung has experienced a remarkable rate of economic and cultural development in recent years. Along with the new Municipal Building, the City Council Building was completed in October 2010.
The initial design competition included 130 entries from 44 countries. It was Taiwan's first large-scale international architectural competition in a public setting. The winning design has set several records. At the time of completion, the new City Council Building had the largest span (67.2 x 50 meters with a 10 meter height) without supporting columns beneath of any office building in Taiwan. The new City Council Building also featured the largest LED screen (20 x 26 meters) and largest pedestrian-only plaza in all of Asia. The new Municipal Center was awarded the National Construction Excellence Award in the Best Planning category. |
