The new Taichung City Municipal Building is the first of three new buildings (Municipal Building, City Council Building and Metropolitan Opera House) comprising the new Municipal Center. Located in central Taiwan, Taichung has experienced a remarkable rate of economic and cultural development in recent years. Completed in October 2010, the new Municipal Building began offering services only two months later.
The initial design competition included 130 entries from 44 countries. It was Taiwan's first large-scale international architectural competition in a public setting. At the time of completion, the new Municipal Building featured the largest stone curtain ceiling in Taiwan and also featured Taiwan's first auditorium with a suspension structure. The new Municipal Center was awarded the National Construction Excellence Award in the Best Planning category. |
