Tzu Chi University Department of Communication Studies Building
The Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation, more commonly known as Tzu Chi, is an international humanitarian organization providing charity, medical, educational and disaster-relief services through its network of volunteers. Tzu Chi was founded nearly 50 years ago with core values deeply rooted in Buddhism. Currently the Foundation has more than 500 branches in 50 countries. Tzu Chi University was founded in 1994 and offers numerous areas of study including a nationally recognized college of medicine. Both Tzu Chi Foundation's headquarters and Tzu Chi University are located in Taiwan's eastern coastal city Hualien.
Tzu Chi University's Department of Communication Studies aims to promote a positive change in the general public through traditional and new media channels. Since inception, the department has continued to grow along with the rest of Tzu Chi University. The increasing student base necessitated a new Department of Communication Studies building. Low tuition rates dictate the funding of new facilities almost entirely by donations, placing great importance on cost-saving measures whenever possible. The new building originally separated the structural system into four components (two building blocks of rigid shear wall systems and two blocks of movement frames). The value engineering services resulted in a new structural system that linked the four building blocks together using floor trusses that utilized the stiffness of the shear wall system. The revised system resulted in substantial cost savings. |
